STATE OFFICE INTERN, OFFICE OF SENATOR LAPHONZA BUTLER
It was in my Political Science class at Ohlone Community College that I first heard about the summer internship program at the office of Senator Laphonza Butler. This was it! I went through the application process - filling out the application, going through the panel interview, and in the end, convincing them that they absolutely needed representation from the California community colleges.
My internship was a whirlwind of activity, especially with the ever changing political landscape during the summer of 2024. I gathered morning news clips from the D.C. office, drafted multiple memos, and assisted hundreds of constituents with navigating the complexities of government agencies like the SSA and Medicare.
I also delved into the intricacies of the Employee Retention Tax Credit, drafting memos that dissected its implications for businesses and taxpayers. I researched and composed a comprehensive policy proposal on Teen Dating Violence Prevention Act (H.R. 7930) for the Senator to introduce as a companion Senate bill.
A key highlight of my internship was a private tour of the Federal Reserve in San Francisco to represent the Senator. This behind-the-scenes look at our central bank was a fascinating and informative experience. I learned about the complex policies and procedures involved in tracking, storing, and disposing of paper money.
My internship was more than just hands-on experience; it was a deep dive into the inner workings of government and the shaping of legislative proposals. I left with a profound understanding of how policy impacts lives—and the determination to keep pushing for meaningful change.
